Jasmine Paolini becomes the first Italian woman to reach WTA quarter-finals in 21 years

A day after was Jannik Sinner confirmed as the new world No 1 Italian tennis was celebrating another first.

Jasmine Paolini reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 250 tournament in Palermo on Wednesday, becoming the first Italian woman to reach the last eight of a WTA event since 2001.

The 26-year-old Paolini, ranked 90th in the world, defeated fellow Italian Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 15 minutes.

Paolini broke Bronzetti's serve twice in the first set and once in the third set, while Bronzetti broke Paolini's serve three times.

In the quarter-finals, Paolini will face 12th seed Andrea Petkovic of Germany.
